SILT is a visual arts research studio committed to image making using ecologically sound materials and methods. The studio has an eco darkroom for photographic processes and an ink making and textile dye station. SILT offers regular workshops and courses such as Textile Making, Mark Making, Botanical Inks and Eco Photographic Processes. An exhibition and events programme is under development concerning the critical theory and material processes of ecologically focused visual art practices. Artworks, prints and publications are available for purchase and SILT will be offering a range of eco-friendly art materials such as paint, inks, paper, charcoals and chalks many of which are made in-house.
SILT is run by visual artists Alison Ballance and Anna Chrystal Stephens who bring collective knowledge and experience of socially engaged art practice and workshop facilitation, building on themes and techniques from their own art practices to enable learning through exploration. They have exhibited, performed and published in public galleries and arts organisations such as Whitechapel Gallery, ICA, The Showroom, V&A, The Tetley, SPACE, Site Gallery, PEER, Focal Point Gallery, Happy Hypocrite, Hardwick Gallery, AirSpace Gallery and Broadway Gallery. They have previous experience of curating and running art spaces, working with diverse community and environmental groups, and teaching in HEIs.
